Flint Alloy Fire Starters

One downside to a magnesium fire starter is that it takes time to make the magnesium shavings.  If it happens to be a windy day, then the wind can blow your shavings away if they are not protected.  A type of fire starter solves this by creating a flint alloy containing magnesium, iron, and other metals all in one bar.  When scrapped with a striker, the heat from the friction ignites the scrapings into hot sparks.

This is a typical fire starter that uses the flint alloy rod.  You can use the striker or any sharp object such as your knife to produce the sparks.  The rods are made in different diameters and lengths.  They are fireproof and can be used when wet.

This fire starter called the blast match was made for one handed operation.  The flint rod is spring loaded in the handle with the striker underneath the thumb tab.  The tab is pressed down while the handle is pressed down pushing the rod into the handle.  The internal striker will scrape against the rod emitting sparks into your pile of tinder.
